How much damage can a horse do?
« on: March 06, 2007, 14:42:41 »
A lot!

Large horse of some description was loose on the lane into Hamble. Someone in a van had got hold of its teather, attached it to a cargo loop in the back and was slowly (walking speed) headed down the lane towards the paddock it had gotten out of.

90 in front of me staying WELL back and me behind the 90, Hazards on keeping back to.

Enter the chav with loud music and twin exit exhausts in his little yellow Saxo

Went stright round me as I tried to wave him to back off, past the 90 and as he was almost out of my sight round the 90....

BANG!

bits of yellow plastic all over the road, rear quarter panel with a hoof sized hole in it bumper and one of the chavvy exhaust boxes removed. The horse decided it was way too much to have to deal with and gave it both hoves as it went past. Horse seemed ok but was doing a passable job of dragging the van backwards against its handbrake. Said Chav was looking at his poor car as me and the 90 drove past.

And the final nice touch, 90 driver waved at him and gave him a thumbs up.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Didn't feel the urge to remove the bumper completely for him then, or just remove him from the gene pool to save us all

Trouble is the chav will probably be claiming against the horse owner for the damage. And worse still, he will probably get the money. I do hope he can't find out who the owner is. Some people deserve all they get.

Driving out from home the other morning, there was a horse and rider coming the other way. The horse looked a little skittish so I stopped and even switched off the engine. The rider was , of course, most grateful and couldn't thank me enough for my thoughtfulness. She shouldn't have had to. Everyone should have done exactly the same. It's a sad world where people are just so thoughtless to others.

Horses were around before cars and will be aroound after they have gone.  Whilt I think that horse riders should carry insurance and do some sort of CBT too, in this case I have to say chav's fault entirely.  There could have been anything in front of the vehilce he overtook, cyclist, horse, previous traffic incident.

Why do some idiots insist they know better than the driver they are following and insist on pushing past all the time.

Got what was coming.

Oh, and as for suing the horse owner, road traffic act 1974 IIRC.

Yep - no chance of suing the horse owner - many years ago my father found out that you couldn't do that when a cow came over the hedge and killed his Fiat

I was once told off by a horse rider for switching off my engine. I was told to pull over and leave the engine running so that the horse just takes it in it's stride and walks past. Starting the engine behind the horse after it's passed will spook it.

Depends how long you wait.  Shame she obvioulsy didn't know the advice ebing given to owners of cars isn't it

Maybe they should have to do some sort of CBt before being allowed to take a horse on a public road....

My wife has a horse and it kinda made her smile when I read this to her.  That Chav deserves every bit of damage to his car and should be done for dangerous driving.  what if the horse wasn't being lead but had a small child on it's back.

There is a horse CBT that riders can take, but don't have to but given the vulnerablilty of being on a horse on the road most riders are very sensible, horses are after all not just valuable creatures but also a part of the family I found that out when I started dating my missus  .
got kicked out an banned from the 4x4response forum for having the wrong car and not doing as he's told

Not sure about that. There is an offence of allowing livestock to stray onto the highway. That covers such instances where the fence has not been maintained.
Most horse owners that I know, including my dear wife and daughter, pay a lot of money for public liability insurance. No, thats not right. Ipay a lot of money for their public liability insurance. :(
Re the Chav. Serves him right, the idiot.
Mind you, re horses. I don't trust anything that is bigger than me, has four legs, and a brain smaller than mine. That spells danger. Bloody things! Put them all in tins!  What good are they? All they do is eat and crap and cost a fortune! The horses, not my wife and daughter.
Why can't the females of my family choose something less pricey, like slugs or chinchillas?
Thats it, had enough! Hoss burgers anyone?

You haven't heard by 110 V8!!!

But seriously, you have to judge each time differently. This horse was really twitchy and was not going to pass, so I had no choice but to switch off. I then waited until the horse was some distance past before restarting the engine and gently moving off.

Once the animal becomes more relaxed with vehicles, it is better to just drive past gently. They won't learn that a vehicle is not a threat unless they are subjected to them.

One of Sarahs horses was afraid of the black plastic wrapped bails. So she walked him up and down past them until he wasn't spooking, then put his feed on top of one! He had no choice but to get close! Now he's much better with them.

I have great respect for the damage a horse can do to a car ever since I owned a Wolseley 16/60 with a large dent in a door pillar which was caused by a horse's hoof. Wolseley's were a very well built car at the time

And good looking ones too  (females that is, I dont look at the blokes  )

The chav got his just deserts.

I went round a corner once to meet a horse on a national speed limit road where lorries trundle down it alot of the time. Luckily the horse was ok and didnt spook bu the girl riding it cant have been any older than 14. There should be a legal limit of age on the road riding a horse. If it had decided to go I doubt that girl would have had any chance of controling it.
