REAR SHOCK PLAY

hi lads just a quickie! does anyone have play in there rear shocks because i have and was just wondering if anyone elses the same before i go out and buy a new bush kit. i checked mine by just grabing the rear shocks and wiggling back and forth.i reckon i have about 10-15 mm of play with the motor on the ground it just dont seem right to me!!?

Hi peasy.

I noticed the same in one of my rear shocks last week. On further investigation the large washer on the loose side was different than the firmer side (neither was "Tight"). I ended up using another large washer to shim it out and that cured the waggle.

The mounting bracket at the top has a shaft thats threaded for about the last inch. You need a washer with a big enough central hole to go over the shaft or it wont work.

so what your saying is that its ok for it to move like that,cheers i was getting concerned that the old v8 was going to cost me yet more moneylol!! mind you to replace the bushes it wont cost much i looked around for prices thinking it would be a small fortune but you can get both sides top and bottom for about £12 so not to bad. i was going to replace them as she seems to feel squirmy at the back in the wet while cornering and going over bumps etc.

The vast majority of the work the damper does is in the up and down plane, not side to side and any loads at an angle are usually limited to the extreme ends of the articulation so as long as the play is not along the length of the shock it should be fine.  But, as with all things, its not designed to have any 'twist' type play even though it wont affect things too much, so if it's not designed to have any, best to get rid.  Just put it on you list under the squealing brakes and 'P' gasket leak, but above interior lights not working.......

General experiance is that any noticable play found there during an MOT is a fail, test useually involves grabbing the damper and giving it a shake. The old series had a pin rather that a nut to tighten up the bushes and envairably all the shock mounts needed attention before an MOT.

hi peasey ive just had to replace my shock rubbers on my td5 90 and trust me for the sake of a couple of quid it was easy the only thing is use a vice to put the new ones back in with plenty of greese all the way thro the shock shaft and if you can get hold of a spare bit of tube pipe the same size as the top part of shock even easyer only need be about 10mm thick as it just helps finnish off the seating of the rubbers and the jobs a good'un and it all goes to expiereance? ( :? if thats how u spell it) only thing need to be careful of is removeing top bolt as these have habbit of snapping just undo and dont wiggel the  nut plenty of wd40 1-2days before you take it off
