is my car thatcham approved???

I have just insured my 1999(late 300 shape)V8 disco and they say it must have a thatcham approved immobiliser fitted  .It is my 5th discovery but the 1st time i have been asked for a thatcham appproved immobiliser   :roll:
Unfortunately i have just renewed my insurance 1 month before buying this car so dont really want to cancel it and go elsewhere(due to "admin" costs   )
so-
1-is my alarm/immobiliser thatcham approved(standard fit 2 button lr alarm)
2-where can i get proof its thatcham approved
3-it also has a toad alarm fitted,is there anywhere/anyone(around south yorks) who fits these that could confirm its thatcham approved and provide a cert

If its just an imobiliser then its a thacham cat 2.
If its an alarm inobiliser then its a cat 1.

As far as I've been told it has to be fitted by a qualified mechanic not a DIY job.

Thats it. I was told with mine that the Land Rover alarms are not as good as aftermarket.

doesnt matter whats on it, if you do not have the fitting certificate it isnt anything approved anymore!
been there, pain in the but when you know you have a £600 system fitted t1, but no fitting certificate to provide to the insurer.
i make a point off keeping certs and pasing on with vehicle when i sell, but many dont.

Hang on ... are you saying my RR has no alarm because there is no cert?

It's the factory one and is apparently almost unbeatable?! (in tests with thieves). i.e. way to nick it is to steal keys or kidnap owner :(

Or for that matter my 1997 D1? Flux accept the standard 2 button alarm/immobiliser as sufficient. No cert needed as it is *all* factory.

im on about aftermarket!  im sure if its factory fit then it will be good.
just asumed as 99% of us are buying used motors, especially for offroading.
although if your not sure check as the insurance companies do like to wriggle out of paying up.

Second hand or new - if factory fit was Thatcham X when it was bought, it should still be Thatcham X ..... as the only time it will become an issue is change of owners, which is a bit unfair!

if it only does 1 point immoliser then its a cat 2
cat 1 is more than 2 point of immobiliser and a alarm

my td5 has a factory fitted alarm :D and immobiliser :D  insurance wont to no now if its thatcham?  :shock: why? diffrance in insurance of £650.00  so i rang landrover to find out and get copy of cert long call ended with sorry sir we dont keep that on our records good bye   :x

so after a lot of telphone calls i got someone to come out and fit a new immobiliser at my house for £99.00 inc vat and i got a shiney new cert as well insurance company now happy i £100 out of pocket for some paper but hay i now have x2 immobiliser's on my car
1x factory fitted on the remote fob
1x key fob (dont even have to push it in anything it picks it up in the car )
2x alarms (i a hevey sleeper)
as i was told t2 ralates to immobiliser only and t1 relates to alarm only or it might be the other way round im more than happy with the results as well, when the man was installing the immobiliser a couple of pikeys who live in my street even commented on how good that perticular product was :shock: and ther wernt much piont in trying to nick it (laught quickly and smile ho [!Expletive Deleted!])

Thanks for the info guys,after 20 minutes on the phone to the insurance goon :roll:   i described in detail how the standard alarm worked with a transponder system,and eventually he agreed that it was upto standard even without the second immobiliser  :lol:

I went through this with FireBond of all people. It took em three months to tell me that the factory fitted alarm/immobiliser on my 93Disco wasn't Thatcham Approved. The insurance expired last week (renewed with Highway through PostOffice) and they still hadn't told me whether it was acceptable or not.

Same problem with Direct Line last year, I phoned Land Rover customer services who put me through to their technical support who told me the type of alarm, its type approval and that it was thatcham 1 approved.  Just give them your reg or vin and they will tell you.  If you have a rover 2 button fob that operates the door locking and has an immobiliser then its the approved version.

In the end what they have wanted from me is some form of proof that the system works, so I get a piece of paper from my local independant saying the alarm works.

The actual Thatcham rules for Discos are:
pre Sept 95 D1 - delisted when Thatcham rules changed in 1998. Crooks had caught up with the then technology so the old LRSS & LRSS+ systems were delisted. They were previously to the old Cat 1 standard. Thatcham advise to insurers is to respect the old rating for existing customers and require a new system for new customers.
Sept 95 - Nov 98 D1 - Cat 1
Nov 98 onwards D2 - Cat 2
D3 - Cat 1
